In October, PILP, together with PAX, Stop Arms Trade and the NJCM, started emergency proceedings (summary proceedings) against the Dutch State to stop arms trade to Egypt. According to the NGOs, the serious human rights situation in the country and the role of the Egyptian armed forces in it should be reason not to export arms to Egypt, at least for the time being.

On Nov. 23, 2021, the court ruled on the case. In it, the court ruled, among other things, that although the human rights situation in Egypt is worrisome, the State was still allowed to decide to grant export licenses. See our press release on the ruling here.

Although the organizations are pleased that the court looked at the substance of the case, they believe that the court should have reached a different conclusion: namely, that exports to Egypt cannot be allowed under the current circumstances. Therefore, they filed an appeal against the court’s ruling on December 20, 2021. Read our appeal brief here.
