Over the course of 1.5 years, PILP has initiated litigation in multiple municipalities in light of secret investigations into the Muslim community. An important hearing on the Veenendaal mosque case will take place on Friday, March 21, 2025, which will delve into the question if the investigations are unlawful and violate fundamental rights.

What lead to this hearing?

In October 2021, the Dutch newspaper NRC revealed that at least 10 municipalities have asked the company NTA to carry out secret investigations into local mosques. The revelations in the NRC article titled “Undercover naar de moskee: geheim onderzoek naar islamitische organisaties” have had a significant impact on the Muslim community. As a result, many mosques across different municipalities have gone to court.

What will the hearing on Friday, March 21 be about?

The mosque in Veenendaal argues that the investigations are unlawful because they violate fundamental rights. During the investigations, the mosque and the private lives of its affiliated persons were subject to thorough scrutiny. Their religious thought had been investigated, and the findings had been gathered in a secret report without a fair hearing. It was only after the publication of the NRC article that the mosque discovered the existence of the investigation. What resulted from it is a report containing numerous assumptions and factual errors, which has then been shared with the police and security forces. This is a violation of the fundamental right to respect for private life, freedom of religion, and freedom of association. The investigation is also discriminatory, since Muslims in the municipality have been exclusively scrutinized. The court will have to pass a verdict on this subject.

Can I attend the hearing?

Yes, the hearing is open to the public. It will be held at the Central Netherlands District Court (Utrecht) on Friday, March 21, 2025 at 9 a.m. You do not need to register in advance.
