Support procedure asylum children Almelo
In 2015, the family shelter in Almelo threatened to be closed. This would mean that all the families living there would have to move to other centers spread throughout the Netherlands. Children in Asylum Seekers Centers already have to move so often, which is bad for them. Also, the children very much wanted to stay together. For these reasons, the closure and dispersal were litigated against by lawyers Channa Samkalden (Prakken D’ Oliveira office and Corrien Ullersma (Van der Woude de Graaf office). The proceedings and the children are supported by children’s rights organization Defence for Children International. The proceedings were initially lost.
PILP supports the appeals (civil and administrative) by paying the court fees, a partial guarantee for a possible court cost order and by means of an amicus curiae or opinion letter, written by members of the PILP working group on immigration law, to the higher appeal instances. This is an important and principled case in which the International Convention on the Rights of the Child plays a major role.
