Human rights organizations in Cura\u00e7ao are therefore concerned about households in Cura\u00e7ao currently being disconnected. The Ombudsman of Cura\u00e7ao, along with the Ombudsman of St. Maarten and the National Ombudsman, already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaleombudsman.nl\/nieuws\/nieuwsbericht\/2020\/ombudsmannen-vragen-aandacht-voor-problemen-in-caribisch-deel-koninkrijk\">pointed out<\/a> the lack of access to clean drinking water for vulnerable citizens in Cura\u00e7ao in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Association Hende-i-Medio-Ambiente (HiMA) initiated proceedings against the Land of Cura\u00e7ao over the right of access to clean water and adequate sanitation for a group of vulnerable people, including the elderly and minor children. HiMA therefore approached PILP because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pilp.nu\/dossiers\/het-recht-op-water-voor-kinderen\/\">proceedings in the Netherlands<\/a> on children&#8217;s right to water. The same arguments are at play in both proceedings and the Land Cura\u00e7ao relies on the first instance <a class=\"broken_link\" href=\"https:\/\/uitspraken.rechtspraak.nl\/inziendocument?id=ECLI:NL:RBDHA:2022:3043\">ruling<\/a> of the District Court of The Hague. Defense for Children Netherlands and the NJCM appealed that ruling.<\/p>\n<p>On behalf of and with Defense for Children Netherlands and the NJCM, as <em>amicus curiae<\/em>, PILP wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/pilp.nu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2023.02.20-Amicus-DEF-alle-logos_Redacted.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to the Court of First Instance in Cura\u00e7ao. In the letter, the organizations address what the right to water for children includes and why they should not be cut off from water. In this way, PILP, NJCM and Defense for Children Netherlands hope to contribute to the protection of children&#8217;s rights in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
